Travelers cast their vote on Maui, and the island is expected to hold a referendum on whether to allow tourists in November.
“Travel is definitely on the upswing,” said Mike Ziegler, who travels regularly to Maui for business and pleasure.
“There’s a lot of activity and tourism going on in Mauiloes island.”
The city of Oahu also saw a large increase in tourism, which is expected increase by more than 3,000 percent.
Travelers can get around much of Maui’s restrictions, though the rules can be difficult to navigate.
If you don’t have a permit, you can’t drive or even walk the streets of Oʻahu, which are restricted to motor vehicles.
It’s a similar situation on Kauai, where a number of Mauis residents have filed a petition to change its regulations.
Maui residents are hoping the islanders’ petition will sway the governor to allow more tourists, but that will be a long and expensive process.
Some Maui residents have expressed concerns that the island’s economy will suffer as the island has become a tourist destination.
Tourism is expected continue to grow, though many locals are also concerned about the possibility of more crime.
